The NFL Draft is in the books, and after a thrilling three days from Kansas City, the New York Jets have the newest members of their team locked in, with seven rookies selected: four on offence and three on defence.

In the first round, the Jets were sat on the 15th selection following their trade with Green Bay, and they stuck with that pick as teams traded around them, ultimately landing on the edge rusher out of Iowa State: Will McDonald IV.

The announcement of the pick provided an amazing moment all in itself, as Make-A-Wish Foundation recipient Kyle Stickles brought some unbelievable energy to the stage in Kansas City.

Will McDonald was at home with his family watching the draft, with the group erupting when the Jets made the call. He joins two former Iowa State alums: Allen Lazard and last year’s second round pick Breece Hall, who played with McDonald for three seasons.

McDonald didn’t start playing American football until high school but quickly made up for lost time, racking up 34 sacks in his college career and becoming a three-time first-team All Big 12. He was viewed as one of the premier pass-rushing prospects entering the draft, and joins a loaded Jets defensive line.

"I'm going to bring everything I can to the Jets," McDonald told Jets media after his selection, "whether it's playing special teams, being a role player, doing whatever I've got to do. There were a lot of things I learned at Iowa State, I learned a lot of poise. I've been around good teammates, doing what I could do."

"We're excited to add Will to the team," GM Joe Douglas said. "We feel like he's one of the most dynamic if not the most dynamic pass rushers in this draft. I think that was on full display at the Senior Bowl. Not to speak for the coach, but he's going to be humming off the edge, using all that God-given length and speed."

"You know how we are with our D-line rotation, making sure everybody touches the field," Coach Robert Saleh said. "We come at you in waves. And with Aaron [Rodgers] here, we'll be playing with a few more late leads, giving us more opportunities to rush the passer. Will has got a unique ability to catch the corner."

In round two, the Jets dipped into the offensive line pool, selecting centre Joe Tippmann out of Wisconsin.

At 6’6, Tippmann is a large centre prospect who may have the flexibility to move along the line, whilst his pass-blocking numbers (1 sack allowed in 590 pass block snaps) will endear him to new QB Aaron Rodgers.

"We're fired up to add Big Joe to the team and his 'Wisconsin waterfall' — he probably has the best mullet in the draft," Douglas said. "He's got excellent size, excellent feet, he's great on the move. He's only played center, but with his size and athleticism, he can provide a lot of versatility to our interior. ... He's going to be a good fit."

In round four, the Jets selected Carter Warren, a tackle out of Pittsburgh, with their draft selection made live from London - the second year in a row they made a pick from the UK.

Warren was joined in the later rounds by the selections of running back Israel Abanikanda, linebacker Zaire Barnes, cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse and tight end Zack Kuntz to complete the Jets 2023 rookie class.
